Happy Endings for Lucky Horses

Stories and updates on our horses who have been adopted! This page is very much under construction and I hope to eventually
have all of our adopted horses' stories posted!

Hailey

Hailey is a Spotted Saddlehorse mare in her teens. She was actually one of my very first "rescues" and one of the horses that inspired me to start rescuing full time. I found her at a local sale barn when I innocently went there to buy hay. She was a beautiful mare but terrified and skittish. I was instantly drawn to her and asked the barn owner about her. He said "That horse needs a cowboy. She's not a woman's horse." (yes, I'm serious)

I was told she'd thrown her previous owner and therefore she was crazy. They were having someone come to ride the bucks out of her that weekend and would then auction her off. I knew a misunderstood animal when I met one, and Hailey was clearly misunderstood. It was obvious that her only problem was that she was extremely sensitive and had been subjected to very insensitive owners and riders.

I offered to pay full price for her but he refused to sell her to me. So, I had to give a male friend the money go back and buy her and bring her to my farm. She was here for the summer getting some undersaddle work and learning to trust people again. She was definitely sensitive and required a patient person but she was far from crazy. At the end of the summer, Hailey was adopted by a teacher in Florida. Leah and Hailey were an instant match. They hit it off right away and I knew it would be the perfect home for her.

This was several years ago and they are still doing great! Leah rides Hailey in polocrosse, on the trails and on the beach! Pictured are Leah and Hailey on the beach in St. Augustine, Florida.

Reggie

Reggie is a registered Trakehner gelding who came to the rescue as an 8 year old. He had been a successful Dressage horse and sold for large amounts of money during his short life.

However, due to a stifle injury that ended his show career, he ended up falling through the cracks. His owner no longer had a use for him and the boarding stable could not keep him. He was going to be euthanized.

Thanks to the help of India Watson (who has helped the rescue a lot over the years) he was given a second chance. She brought him to the rescue herself and Reggie was adopted out to a local family. He now lives the laidback life of a family trail horse with the Bonds family and is a spoiled pasture potato. His stifle injury has not held him back in any way!

Coben

Coben is an 8 year old gelding who came to the rescue from Walker County Animal Control. He and Athena (who is still at the rescue) had been seized from their owner three times due to neglect. He was underdeveloped and had obviously not been handled much but was a sweet, cute gelding. I was lucky to find a wonderful foster home with the Ward family. They took Coben and got him started undersaddle and worked on his ground manners.

After he went through "basic training" Coben came back to the rescue a very laid back and well-rounded horse. He was adopted by Dream Power Therapy in Atlanta, GA where he will be a therapy horse for children with disabilities. His small size and calm demeanor make him the perfect horse for this job!

He will have a wonderful life now and couldn't ask for a better farm to call home!

Charlie and Rocky

Charlie and Rocky (formerly known as Frankie while at the rescue) each came to the rescue from separate homes. Rocky came from a family who was getting rid of all of their horses. Unfortunately Rocky had been very poorly handled and never properly trained undersaddle. At his previous home, he was used as a backyard bucking horse. Essentially, people would take turns hopping on him to see how long they could stay on. Charlie came from a local show barn that raises high priced Saddlebreds for $50k and up. He was the result of a poor breeding choice and nearly died due to the neglect he endured. When he came to the rescue he was emaciated with a serious respiratory infection.

Of course, both boys are very healthy and happy now. They became instant friends while at the rescue and were adopted by Cherry and Barry Evans where they live in horse heaven. Cherry and Barry have several rescues and have built an amazing farm for them to live happily. Pictured at left are Rocky and Charlie hanging out in their pasture!
